Space Needle has pride! We at genderpanic are in Seattle and Seattle Pride is here! There’s a rainbow flag flying on top of the Space Needle for the first time ever, and there have been parties and events happening all over the city this past week. We’ve been all over the town, walking in the Dyke March, cheering at the Pride Parade, and browsing the booths at Capitol Hill Pride and the Seattle Pride Festival. We’ve seen the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, naked rainbow men on bicycles, lesbrarians, a 10-foot wide replica of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, Batman on roller skates wearing a g-string, lesbians lube wrestling on a float, and much, much more! It’s been a good week to have fun, to be proud, and to give one’s lover boo an extra squeeze while out in public. We’ve seen so many cute couples, of so many different gender combinations, and are truly delighted by this year’s outpouring of pride in diversity. I spend a lot of time online, following link after link, and often find super cool things. Here’s a handful of blogs that, upon discovery, fell into the ‘ooh-must-read-through-all-archives-now’ category for me. I initially researched her for a gender studies paper about lesbians in the music industry and learned a variety of strange Katy Perry trivia. I haven’t thought much about her since then, until I saw the amazing video that I’ve embedded below, of this year’s AIDS/LifeCycle participants remaking Perry’s hit “California Gurls.” This video is utterly fantastic, but reminded me of what irks me most about Perry – that she has made a fortune for herself mocking the very subculture that she exploits. I’m not usually interested in the lives of artists outside of their music and I am definitely not of the opinion that one has to be LBGTQ in order to care about/be involved in queer issues, but Perry’s sheer hypocrisy just rubs me the wrong way.
