A: A Japanese super hero…of sorts. Hard Gay, comedian Masaki Sumitani, uses punk drag and extreme antics to promote acts of social improvement. HG is a persona meant to be both ridiculous and endearing, a unique gender act that rides the line between legitimizing homosexuality and reinforcing stereotypes. Bottom line is that HG is a hilarious genderfuck with a heart of gold. Check out HG’s visit to a Japanese ramen shop. 
Absolut Pride 40th anniversary bottle Just as he did in 2009, Obama has once again officially declared June as “Pride Month“. Here in Seattle, we at genderpanic are totally psyched about attending both the Capitol Hill Pride Festival and Seattle Pride downtown. This is a big year for pride – it’s the 40th year anniversary for pride festivals in some of the US’s largest cities, such as NYC, San Francisco, LA and Chicago. All throughout the month of May, there are Great Global Kiss-In events taking place in major cities worldwide. Check out the Kiss-In link and see if your city is listed! If your city (like mine, unfortunately) didn’t have an event this year, check on the Kiss-In website to see what you could do to put together an event next year. Queer visibility is a powerful tool! I have heard through the internet grapevine (grape-tubes?) that young people have a new phrase to ward off the terrifying prospect of being mistakenly identified as homosexual. So the next time you’re drunk and telling your frat bro how much you love him, simply follow it up with “no homo” and he’ll know that it’s still just a hetero bromance between you. Worried about buying a guy friend a beer? Still want to give your tackle football buddies a friendly slap on the ass after an excellent turnover? “No homo” is here for you! Now, to be honest, I hadn’t heard the phrase “no homo” before a couple of days ago. I was browsing Facebook when I saw someone wearing a t-shirt that said “ARMY: NO HOMO” in their profile picture. My interest was piqued instantly. The shirt was decidedly professional looking, and after a short round of searching I discovered that it was once a product offered by the often irreverent and sometimes offensive BustedTees. The “Army: No Homo” shirt is now notably no longer available, but the URL and photographic evidence remain. 
"Obama Pride" campaign logo. Wow, it’s been a little while. I’m really not sure where the time goes… But the fact that it’s November is just surreal. In any case, I thought I’d take this time to post a quick update about a few things. We are just a few days past the anniversary of the election of Barrack Obama, the United States’ first African American president. Obama ran on a campaign of “hope”, with a view to a new future for a struggling America. I’m sure we all remember how he openly courted the LGBTQ vote with promises of change. One year later, what has changed for the LGBTQ population? On the same day that Obama won the election, residents of California voted on Proposition 8, a heavily religiously funded campaign to strip away the rights of lesbian and gay people to marry. Running on the old fallback campaign of “protecting the sanctity of marriage”, the measure passed. It left a bitter aftertaste in the mouths of many who had, only hours before, been filled with hope when Obama’s win was officially announced.
